Antonin Novotný (22-08-1827 - 09-03-1871) Austrian-Czech problemist

Antonin Novotný collaborated with the "Illustrierte Zeitung" and the "Wiener Schachzeitung" and was one of the most notable problemists of the 19th century.
He gave his name to the Novotny theme : a white unit is sacrificed on a square where two lines of action of two long-range black pieces meet and thus interferes both of them simultaneously.

Victor Cuciuc (22.08.1918 - 16.07.1989) Romanian composer

In 2009 Valeriu Petrovici and Dinu-Ioan Nicula published a booklet about Victor Cuciuc: "Problemistul Victor Cuciuc" (Buletin Problemistic). Let's quote the preface of this opus:
Victor Cuciuc was a versatile man of chess: a composer, arbiter and solver, he also played chess tourneys and correspondence tourneys. Born in Bessarabia (nowadays Republic of Moldova) he started chess in the late 1930s. He asserted himself in the field of direct mate problems, in which he obtained several titles of national champion in the 1950s until the 1970s. He was the promoter of a thematic idea he thus defined in 1951: "In the initial position, no piece is pinned; during play at least three black pieces are pinned and White gives mate using these pins."
After wandering through the country because of his profession of construction engineer, in the last part of his life he finally set home in the city of Braila, on the banks of the Danube.

Σπύρος Μπίκος (22-08-1911 - 23-09-1987) Greek composer (Spyros Bikos)

Spyros Bikos
[Thanks to Emmanuel Manolas]

Spyros Bikos was a pioneer of Greek composition. He left his name to a twomover theme, for whose definition we can refer to Emmanuel Manolas : "in one phase, in one variation a self-block is exploited and in another variation the moving piece is captured. In another phase, the same two defenses have reciprocal continuation ). For this theme a composition contest was organized in Holland, in 1948, having as judge the Hollander G. Seilberger."
Spyros Bikos was also the editor of the magazine "To Mat" between 1952 and 1964.
